James Franco Will Play Sal Mineo in New Feature Film about the Life of the First Actor Who Admitted that He Was Gay

Sal Mineo was born, Slavatore Mineo Jr on January 10, 1939 in the Bronx, N.Y. He was the son of a Sicilian coffin maker.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, James Franco will play Sal Mineo in a biography about the actor who was murdered in West Hollywood at the age of 37. Sal Mineo got his start in show business when he performed in the play,  The Rose Tattoo in 1955.  It was not until 1955 when he was in his first feature film, Six Bridges to Cross. Later that year he had starred in,  Rebel Without a Cause  playing opposite actor James Dean.  He received a nomination for best supporting actor for an Academy Award.  Mr. Mineo was also known to be the very first actor who admitted that he was gay. His last feature film was Escape From the Planet of the Apes in 1971. His character name was Dr. Miles.  On February 12, 1976, Sal Mineo was murdered.  The murderer  was a pizza delivery man did not know who Mr.  Mineo was when he killed him in the ally behind his apartment. It is ironic that he was murdered by being stabbed and Mr. Mineo's nickname was, Switchblade. Sal  Mineo was buried at the Gates of Heaven cemetery in Hawthorne,  New York at the same cemetery as Babe Ruth, Fred Allen, Paul Dixon and Billy Martin.
