Sly Stone was born Sylvester Stewart  on March 15, 1943 in Denton, Texas.  He was raised in a religious family. By the time he was 7 years old he was playing the keyboards and by 9 the guitar and drums.  He always loved music.  He got his name Sly in grade school when a classmate misspelled his name.  In the early 1960's, Stone worked as a DJ in San Francisco at K-Sol which was later changed to a Soul music station. He also had worked as a record producer and later performed as Sly and the Family Stone. Dance to the Music and Everyday People were two of the groups successful hits. After the huge success things spiraled down due to drugs and mismanagement of money.  Stone once lived in a mansion in Beverly Hills and currently lives in a white van in Crenshaw park in L.A. It was reported that he relies on food from handouts from neighbors.  He is currently 68 years old.
