Hip Hop Websites vs Homeland Security & Record Labels

We been followin this since DAY-1, and they shoulda included us (and/or the big homie Mr. Davey D) in this segment, but fuck it...

Last year Homeland Security shutdown several key hip hop websites for copyright infringement. These were sites that worked closely with the labels, basically the labels gave them the music to leak. Should the labels have come to the defence of the websites?

GYMR CO-SIGN: The Incomparable Shakespeare

How you market a rapper with a 4.00000000h!?



Congratulations to The Incomparable Shakespeare on receiving the third-ever GYMR CO-SIGN! (This is not a title we award lightly.) Like Homeboy Sandman or GYMR resident emcee AWKWORD, the homie Shake represents a new wave of emcees who are educated — and aint afraid to speak/write/rap like it.

According to Shake

The story behind it is an interesting one. A couple years ago, I was being courted by a bunch of major labels which culminated with a deal on Universal. Before landing the deal, I’d have meetings with A&R’s who would be like, “you’re dope, but we don’t know what to do with you”. All the while I’d be balancing schoolwork and hustling music. Although things didn’t pan out as I wished, I learned that the industry’s business model is built on competition, not innovation. So instead of chasing the status quo, I began to really embrace the things that made me different. Although I’m 2 years removed from it, graduating Summa Cum Laude is one such thing. So while we often hear about drug dealers, grandiose living or rappers dropping out, I’m the proud graduate! (For the record, although I maintained a 4.0 for several consecutive semesters, my final GPA was a 3.85).
